DOGS AND CATS ARE EUROPE'S MOST POPULAR PETS

An interesting report by FEDIAF presents detailed statistics on the number of pets in EU countries in 2016. In numerical terms, cats are the most popular pets in the European Union (74.4 million), followed by dogs (63.7 million), birds (40.5 million), small mammals (20.1 million) and lastly reptiles (6.1 million). France and Germany have the most cats, with 13.5 and 13.4 million respectively. As for dogs, the countries with the highest number of canines are Germany (8.6 million) and the United Kingdom (8.5 million). Birds are most popular in Italy (12.9 million) and Spain (7 million). Small mammals, of which there are fewer than the aforementioned species, are mainly to be found in homes in Germany (5 million) and France (2.4 million). Reptiles are the least prevalent pets in the European Union: the country with the most reptiles is Italy, with 1.4 million, followed by Germany with 1.1 million.
